Depending on how deeply The Matrix has its hooks in you, you probably wear a watch — or at least keep track of time. Now, you can do that and show off your affectation for the game-changing sci-fi film series all in one fell swoop.
The Hamilton PSR MTX Digital Quartz watch does not appear to be an item of digital artifice, created by our machine overlords to further deceive us. (But it might be.) In fact, if our perceived experience is an elaborate computer program, the watch is one of the least-assuming interfaces between ourselves and machine intelligence that we’ve seen recently.
The LCD timepiece channels the same strange retro-tech aesthetic that distinguished the film. It’s a strongly simplistic piece. The black stainless steel band and case house the no-nonsense screen. From it, four numerals give off the characteristic neon-green glow. The engraved inside surface of the case reveals vertically-oriented “digital rain” — the raw code of the matrix itself.
A black PVD coating helps protect the semi-gloss sheen. Digital quartz movement supports the strictly-limited functionality. Hamilton bases the design on its original LED watch, the Pulsar. Introduced in 1970, its simple but striking innovation altered the landscape. Just like the Pulsar, the PSR MTX tells time. Period.
The limited-edition Hamilton watch arrives just ahead of the series’ upcoming fourth film, The Matrix: Resurrections. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss return to help bring it to the marquee on December 22.
If you want to wear your PSR MTX Digital Quartz watch to the premiere, act fast. Hamilton offers 1,999 pieces (the same number as the release year of the original film). MSRP is $1,082. Ordinarily, we’d recommend setting your watch alarm so you don’t miss the show. In this case, though, you might be better off relying on the matrix to inextricably lead you there.
