Editorial Guidelines: How We Create Reviews and Buyer’s Guides
We pledge to do our best to provide you with accurate, useful, and timely advice for product buying. Our goal is to save you time researching products with the absolute best information we can create.
Gear Hungry does not and will not accept paid placements in our buyers’ guides. We also will not accept payment for positive reviews. Our guides are our best advice for you, the consumer, and aimed at being fair and impartial.
GearHungry: How We Choose Products
We choose which products are featured in our buyer’s guides in a few ways. The process is constantly evolving, but as of March 2021, this is how we do it.
First, we aggregate consumer reviews to determine which products are top-rated. Second, we interview experts like athletes (for boxing gloves, for example), renowned outdoors-people (for camping gear), or mechanics (for tools) and find out which products they like best in a given category. Finally, we interview and meet with brands to learn about the exciting new products coming to the market soon to test them before their release.
This gives us a great, holistic view of some of the best products available. From there, we move on to deeper research and real-world product testing. Products that make the final cut usually meet three factors:
- Readily available to buy
- Highly rated by customers and online reviews
- New to the market or a longtime market leader
GearHungry: Testing and Research
To achieve our goal of providing the best possible advice for consumers, experts use products for their intended purpose and compare them, when possible, head-to-head. Our goal is to select just a few products that will meet the needs of specific consumers.
Thus, we will label selections with adjectives like “best overall,” “best budget choice,” “best for experts,” and in many other ways depending on the product category.
We do this to save you time and money by connecting you with the best possible choice for your needs.
AllGear and Gear Testing
In January 2021, the AllGear group expanded our gear testing program already in place at GearJunkie.com, where the team focuses on outdoor gear. The expansion applies our years of in-person product testing to other websites in our portfolio, including GearHungry.com.
So if you’ve been following the site, you should notice a renewed focus on quality product testing and original photography. We do this with a growing team of product experts, who you can meet here.
Ultimately, our final goal is to serve you, the reader, with fair, expert, impartial buying advice. And we’d love to hear from you. We welcome feedback, criticism, praise, and insights through email or even a phone call. Find our contact information here.
